Comments: You have succesfully captured the essense of Ultralight flying, I am 23 now and have always dreamed of one day owning an ultralight, your sight brought back those vivid memories of years ago, before the bitter reality of getting a private pilots license. I am happy to now say that after years of distractions and saving I finally bought a Quicksilver MX about a month ago. I am now learning to fly it and the emotions it gives you are indescribable, this is why I wanted to fly in the first place. Thank you and safe flying!

I used to fly with my dad when I was 10-12 yrs. and used to read his flying magazines and daydream about the ultralight ads in there. I read the whole thing over and over again. I am a 18 year old young pilot and I am going for my instructor license (CFII). I want to get an ultralight but at this moment I am not financially ready for that. I would love to fly one though but cant find anyone in NY with one. Well I think your story was very inspirational. It sure did give me something to look forward to. I also loved the dedication that you gave to your daughter. I wish my parents did something like that. Well to rest of the fellow pilots out there..... fly safe and someday I hope to meet alot of you. Fly high and fly safe.

Obviously, you can build a "textbook website"...the way a website should look, but perhaps your missing the "career boat". Your writing style reminds me of "Jonathan Livingston Seagull". Ever read that book? He is a pilot too. Maybe you should write!!! Your daughter must be very proud...I was very touched by the dedication to her. Hope to see more of your work, on the net, or in a bookstore.

Comments: It was so nice reading your story. The reason why I was interested in Ultralight planes was that there was recent discovery of whale sharks a few kilometers from my place and that (when there are no tourists around) they are slaughted by the local fishermen and sold to Taiwanese buyers for food and oil products. You see whale sharks can grow up to 85 feet in length and don't eat humans (They each plankton, cryl and small schools of fish instead), are very gentle creatures, so gentle you can actually swim with them and hang on to their dorsal fin. They are not mammals and are considered game by some. They are now protected by law but are still hunted down occassionally. So. I imagined, that if there maybe some form of transport that is affordable & easy enough to build and fly, we could actualy help protect them and make them flourish (they give birth only after 30 years of sexual maturity). 15 minutes away from my house is an airfield abandoned due to political reasons) that was unfinished but can accomodate planes as big as Cessna's and even 737s. So why not ultralights?
I'm not a flyer (yet), nor do I know how much ultralights cost or if they can be accessed in my country, but I am someone believes that maybe something can be done about the current situation here.
Thanks for reading.

I've had some time in a glider, and a few hours in a "lake-hopper" in Northern Michigan, but the experience you shared was much more than just about flying. The demonstration of what you can accomplish when you pursue a dream is inspirational. Good luck on the next one. And I know there will be a "next" one - and it is dreams I'm talking about. Peace.

Thanks for reminding me of just how incredible it can be to be at the controls of an ultralight. Your web building skills are among the best I've seen, and your writing about flying ranks right up there with Baxter (a high compliment indeed). The combination is unbeatable!

The sport is not so popular here in Manila, but shortly after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in Pampanga where Clark Air Base used to be, they started introducing UL flying (guess where?) just above the dried up lahar (probably makes it less painful to drop!). There's very little media support to popularize the UL. After seeing your pictures and listening to similar stories of your other website visitors, I'll probably just hit the road (I think that's take-off!) one of these days! Thanks for your inspiration which is more like my wake-up call. I'll take your advice - spread my wings and fly...also in life...with flying colors! Comments: Bruce Brown, who produced the two Endless Summer surfing movies, couldn't've done a better job than you on this story! I've had the pleasure of pullin' Gs in almost every US military attack and fighter jet over the past ten years, shooting pictures from the back seat. Thanks to you, though, I've slowed down a bit, by two orders of magnitude or so, and taken up flying ultralights and shooting from the front seat. Now, at least I can see what I'm almost gonna miss.
Thanx. . . .

Comments: There is a small minority in life that has a fear of flying and a small minority that fly.
The rest of us just dream about it and I am one of those. Somehow you took me there and for that I am grateful.
Makes me want to get up and chase old dreams. Too late for that for me. But you should fly again and continue your journal for the rest of us.
Best wishes. Cal

Flew hang gliders for 5 years, got out when it became too hard to keep current. U/L flying seemed too noisy. Your story has changed my perception, especially the contour flying.
Splendid communication!

I had my thrill back in '73 as a paratrooper in the 82ND Airborne Div. N.C. I still have that urgent hunger to fly again some day but if I do it's got to be in an U/L, a jump from an airplane at 1,250 ft. only lasts for a short time in the air. I've got to spent some more time enjoying life thats all around us. Mother nature is aboslutey splendid and so is your wonderful web site. It gives me a RUSH just thinking of it. I discovered the joys of ultralight flying in much the same manner as you,...at about the same time. Bought and built a CGS Hawk and flew out of a grass strip in Pemberton, NJ. Oh, but the memories of flying in ground effect for twenty miles down the Rancoccas Creek to the Delaware River. The Hawk hasn't felt the wind for six years now, in storage waiting for next spring and summer. Thank you ever so much for a half hour's worth of dreamy memories.
