ere is where you can read what others have had to say about either this site or about ultralight flying. The logbook has now grown into five volumes and each is filled with comments that are really rather remarkable. Thank you, all.

If you read the entire journal you will understand the pleasure I take in telling you that I have started flying again. And if you're interested in the details, I have started to chronicle them in what I now call Chapter Two.

Should you care to add your own entry to this logbook, remember to then reload this page in your browser to see your entry on top of the list.

Comments: I fly a Quicksilver MXII along the beaches here giving rides and log about 300 hours a year. Problem, fuel prices here are very high and my Rotax engine no one seems to be able to work on. Semi-sollution and this is where i need help, we have GEO-Metro Suzuki engines down here which i can buy for $350.00 conversion is either on top with a B-box or as some have suggested by lowering the center of gravity, leaving the prop where it is now and placing the motor behind the seat and working with a pulley system and 4 belds and leaving the prop where it is now, will have more power, less fuel consumption, tbo will go up tremendeously and any car mechanic can overhaul this engine in a weekend. Any sensible suggestions- Thank you.

Comments: I enjoyed your site very much. You are very gifted in being able to document the experience in a way that brings this sort of flying to life for everyone. I have had a similar experience with building and flying a KOLB Firestar and later a Challenger II. After logging about 600 hours since 1990, I still enjoy the flying experience, especially sharing it with friends.

I show a show on TV involving ultralights and well I guess that did it because here I am writing you this note. I have been searching for a place whewre I can take lessons but there doesn't seen to be anyplace in my area or close enough to drive to, take a lesson and return home again. Your story is inspiring and has again feed the desire to get up in the air so many you can give a few pointers regarding where to secure lessons, possible meet and discuss ultralights and there purchase, etc. The photo you have attached to the site are fantastic. Anyway, I hope there is some way for you to steer me in the right directions. Thanks, Joe Geist

Comments: Jim, I stumbled across you website when I was Googling for my own, to see if how someone else would find it. I really enjoyed reading your pages. I started to get into triking in 2003, after a 11 year haitus from hanggliding. Why did I give it up? My reasons may be similar to yours, basically kids and dogs take up a lot of time. And hanggliding takes up a lot of time, most of not flying. After 11 years I rediscovered flying and love triking because I can fly at dawn and get home before lunch and still have time for my teenaged kids and dogs. Check out my website, www.jeffsflightlog.com. It is not as flashy as yours, but there is a lot in there. I really enjoyed yours because I am tired of my stories, its nice to read someone elses. Back in 1998, you inspired me to build and fly my own trike (a South African Raptor), right there in Virginia. Although I don't spent much time in it anymore due to family demands, flying the trike has always been about the most fun I've ever had. I am inspired once again, only this time to teach others (and maybe to try my hand at capturing some photos of all this fun). Thanks Jim, for a truly great website.

Comments: I put together one of the first Weedhoppers in the Stateof Iowa in 1980.I and one other guy worked on our own ignition and carb systems that worked very well. By 1987 I logged more than 1200 hrs flying time mostly year round. The Chotia engine came in a box in pieces and needed final polishing porting and assembly. The first thing I did was change the cylinder head cap screws to double threaded studs permanently installed in the engine case. This allowed frequent removal and regasketing of the head. I had never so much as sat in an airplane until starting to learn to fly this Weedhopper. I have heard a lot of negative comments about Weedhoppers but I think most guys didn't do the basics. I last flew this in 1995 with original fabric. Once a season I hand rubbed Armoral in the fabric to help cut static and sun damage. Had it not been for John Chotia I never would have realized a life long dream....

For those who have never tasted the freedom of ultralight flying there is nothing like it.The freedom of flight and to be to be in command of a machine that slips the bonds of earth and you bring it safely back to its nest.. There is nothing like it. Then to think that you can own your airplane at the same rate of a motorcycle. You wonder why the guys have smiles on their faces in all the pictures. Comments: Spencer William reminds me of me. I started with models as a pre-teen, and became an "airport bum" at about 13. For an energetic boy, I recommend spending time at the flying field and getting to know the people in the sport. I guarantee there are lots of ultralights near L.A. - dig out the telephone book, or look them up online to find out where to go. I started out washing planes, sweeping hangars, refueling, etc. An old man at the airport needed help and I was willing to work for free. I made friends and was able to learn to fly for free. I soloed in a Cessna at age 16 and received my private certificate at 17. Now I have owned 5 airplanes, am building another in my living room, and have more than 4000 hours including helicopters. Just go!

Comments: I enjoyed reading your experiences flying..I too am a avid flyer, I fly a paraglider. I just spent this past week flying at Oregon Ridge state park!! Its a old ski hill that had been used for Hang gliding. I climbed the long steep ski hill, laid out my wing took a deep breath and pulled the wing up and started to run down hill, 4 steps later I am up, flying over the crest of the hill I immediately gain altitude, at the bottom of the hill I am 150 feet AGL and make my "S" turns sniffing for thermals and decide to fly the small ridge at the bottom, I managed to get a 20 min. flight all the while a group of scool kids are running a cross country race and I decided to follow them around there course for a bit, it was so much fun, since i started to bleed off altitude, I made my base leg lined up into the wind and landed gently at the parking lot. Talk about relaxing, there nothing like it in the world you are a eagle for just a bit of time..

Comments: Wow, I've rarely been as touched. The phenomenal pics and the minimalistic narrative are great. In my college days, we used to fly hang gliders as decompression after finals. I am slowly getting back, and am in the research phaze. I'm vacillating between canard designs like the Eagle and the more traditional Quicksilver type designs. I'm also looking into a PPG due to a deceleration trauma incident I had with a glider. Thank you for sharing your journey, and it definitely fills a niche about the spirit of flying that nicely rounds out the technical information available online. I hope that someday soon I will be able to know first-hand instead of having to imagine it. With that being said, all journeys that cause one to evolve as a person begin with a dream.

Comments: Well, the picture of your daughter at the end of your journal did me in; tears and emotions jumping around inside me like thermals over the desert. Your site is awesome, your story absolutely wonderful, and your writing captured the moments in time that not only have filled your senses but those who will read your journal. Terrific! And now, I am so ready to get back 'up there’; I 'll be loosing sleep over it! I flew gliders in N.J when I was 16 and in recent years. I have flown other fixed wing contraptions, including a few hours in an open cockpit Steerman, and for a while, cruised above the landscape in helicopters for the Army. Of all these flying experiences, soaring was the ultimate in flying. Kind of like the difference between power boating and sailing. Being out in the elements, with all your senses alive with input and feeling that you are a part of and in a dimension experienced by very few, is the essence of being alive. Flying changes you forever. You’ve done a fabulous job of conveying an experience difficult to describe and your words place the reader as close to the experience as is possible, without actually being there. Thank you for an inspiring, warm and sensitive experience. And thank your daughter for me as well. Soon, my ten year old daughter will be helping me to write our journal! Rob Taylor

Comments: Thanks for creating such a great website for the ultralight/trike enthusiast. I got my private pilot's license almost 2 years ago at Manassis - fulfilling a childhood dream. It only took 18 months and $7k! I'm married now, bought a house in Silver Spring, and have little money. Flying C-172s ain't as liberating as my childhood dream led me to belief. It's more regulated than driving on the Beltway, too expensive for any x-country flying, and not all I thought it would be. I took an intro lesson with JK while out in Arizona several months ago. Holy Sh-t!! Now that's flying! I've been obsessed every since. I've spent a lot of time surfing the net for anything and everything trike related - learning as much as I could. I also spent some time with JB at Harrison Farm, and finally got up in the air a couple of weeks ago for another flight. What a great time! I love these things. Thanks, Steve

It is safer than most planes and forgiving for slight errors. In my 21 years of flying an XL I have never bent a tube and it is a spiritual experience to fly an XL. Have a good day and fly anytime you can. Call me if you have any questions about an XL 402-651-3234 Clark

Comments: Wow. I just finished High School, and before going to college I've been working to save money for a trip to Asia. Ya know--take off a year and see the sites. About four or five years ago I happened across your site, fell in love with ultralights, and unfortunately left it at that. Now a neighbor of mine is giving up his flying habit (his sight is going from age) and wants to sell his ultralight. Doing some searching on the web (After four years all I remembered from this site was "quicksilver ultralight airgasm") and read through your journal again. Now I'm convinced to stave off the trip to Asia and buy this man's ultralight. I think that hundreds of hours above the clouds will be worth FAR more than a few hundred below them. Thank you for the inspiration, and I hope that both you, your wife and your daughter have had as much luck after your flying days as you seem to have had during.

Comments: What a beautiful story! I'm a 20 year old college student with small change and big dreams, and this site and others like it make my yearning for flight that much worse! (but in a good way!) At first i wanted to go the usual route and get a PPL, and maybe fly professionally. Here lately though, I've been wanting to fly ultralights, mainly because of the fun factor, cost, easy maintainance, and the close-knit group of UL-flyers. I've been looking at the Quicksilver line of aircraft, and love the MX's. Unfortunately, being a college student its hard to afford anything, let alone an aircraft! I am determined though to find a way to get airborne, even if it means just flying in a trainer. If anyone knows of any ideas to help me out, feel free to email me. Thank you so much for that amazing story and pictures that confirm everything i'd hoped ultralight flying to be. Blue skies and calm winds! - Joe

You have to go and experience it yourself - nobody can do a good enough job of explaining it (but you come pretty close). Once you have been up there things down on the ground just don't seem to be so important anymore - you get real perspective on life! And the people are all so great!

I am just about ready to fire the new engine up and test it.I will be flying again real soon.I guess you could say that I am somewhat of an ultralight expert.

Comments: I received my Private License when I was 18... Now I am 41. I really couldn't afford to continue flying much during those years in between, but last month I happened on a used MX. I made $2000 in payments to the previous owner, who also happened to have hanger space available, and added $600 in fresh parts. Beautiful machine... Advice to those wishing to fly... just do it anyway you can... it will happen. I have to say - although I am a licensed pilot and had dual instruction in a two-seat MX, my first takeoff in my single seater was shocking. I was 75 feet in the air before I knew it. A wonderful experience... but - it made me think of those who try to teach themselves to fly - don't do it. You will find yourself airborne before you can consider changing your mind. Remember - Takeoffs are optional... Landings are manditory. Get instruction from a qualified instructor. Check out www.aerosports.org for more info. Beautiful site !! Reminds me of Richard Bach and Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Each inspiration to fly is another reminder to just get out there and do it. Thanks for the site.

Comments: Well you've made my day, I'm 65 years along and finally found someone who has confirmed my every suspicion about flying. Number one is that it's supposed to be fun. I became an Naval aviation structural mechanic in 1957, when I flew the first time it was in a P5M-2, a flying boat. I remember thinking, well the take off and landing was fun but the rest bored me to death. I have to remember though I was up there on business. I always thought flying as the early pioneers in did it must have been exciting and fun. Your site, so well photographed and explained made me feel good again about flying. I had a stroke in the last days of May-03 but am recovering nicely, and now I've got a dream to fulfill. Twenty five years in Naval Aviation and now it's my turn to fly the fun planes. I really enjoyed your site I'm passing it on, and thank you so very much. Wishing you, your family and friends "Fair Winds and Following Seas" Tom
